Noise Pop Festival Pre-Party at Cal Academy NightLife
February 14, 2019 6pm
Music by Nosaj Thing (DJ set); DJ sets by Lil’ Waifu and Arumi
Music presented by Noise Pop
Celebrate your love of indie music with NightLife, the official pre-party for the Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival—and the best way to spend Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re newly-in-love or recently broken-hearted (or happily single), we have a silent disco for you: Electronic music producers/DJs Lil’ Waifu and Arumi will host the ultimate “Love Songs vs. Breakup Songs” throwdown in the aquarium. Plus, learn about love songs from someone who knows them inside and out: Musician Thao Nguyen (of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down) will talk about the process and psychology behind the writing and listening to heart-wrenching tracks. In the Piazza, catch a DJ set from LA’s Nosaj Thing—chillwave originator, vocalist, and frequent collaborator with local favorite Toro y Moi (as Laff Trax). Art and science collide in a performance by Chris Van Raalte (aka Vicar) and The BodySynth, a wearable device of his invention that transforms movements and gestures into sound. Treat yourself to a mini-candy bar at a Valentine’s Day craft station while making art for your loved ones. Who knew stargazing could be so risqué? Let our planetarium presenters take you on a slightly more “adult” tour of the night sky during the 6:30 pm live planetarium show, “Celestial Attractions.” Later, catch a screening of “Vortex 2.0,” an immersive visual and sonic feast featuring art by Bedtimes, Chase Hochstatter, Peter Clark, Chris Bjerre, Can Buyukberber, Obscura, and a soundtrack by Shigeto and other local artists.
*Please note premier ticket price for this event: $22 per person, $18 for Academy members."
